Why Use Essential Oils and What Kind? {5 Days of Essential Oils}

Pinterest

Up until a few years ago, I really had no clue what essential oils really were, how they worked or how to use them. Then I went through a time of major depression and a friend suggested I visit her ND {Naturopathic Doctor}. She used a few different things to help me through my depression – one of them being essential oils.

Essential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.

While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

Our mission is to bring back the ancient knowledge of the elements that were given to us at the time of the Creation for the healing, sustaining and protection of mankind. Ancient records indicate that natural elements were mankind’s first medicine. Essential oils were used by Christ and biblical prophets such as Abraham and Moses. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to be used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used for aromatherapy, massage therapy, emotional health, personal care, nutritional supplements, household solutions, and much more. Science continues to validate the many powerful uses of essential oils, including their immune-supporting properties. {source}

While there are a number of different kinds of companies out there that make and produce essential oils, there really is only one company I completely trust; Young Living. I did a lot of research in the beginning and found Young Living to be the most pure and the only company that was truly therapeutic grade and therefore many of their oils can safely be ingested. {I would NEVER recommend ingesting oils from ANY other company}.

The process Young Living uses when planting, cultivating, harvesting, and distilling a batch of oil is crucial to retaining its vital compounds. Without the exact blend of naturally-occurring plant chemicals, an essential oil can lose its beneficial properties and fail to produce the desired effect.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Young Living is able to make this assertion because of our strict cultivation process—illustrated by the Four P’s {Plants, Preparations, Purity, Potency} that guarantees the optimal potency of every Young Living essential oil. I came across your “5 days of…” posts on pinterest today and I love that they are easy to process. I am just learning about essential oils and I can’t seem to learn about them fast enough! So far I use them in oil burners and in making my cleaning products.

      Peppermint oil is a GREAT one for nausea. You can either put ONE drop directly in your mouth (it’s a “hot” oil so some folks can’t do it directly, OR put a drop in a few ounces of water in a glass and drink it (don’t use plastic as it will react with the petrochemical products). You can do this several times a day any time your feel nauseated. There are a few other things I have found that worked too and I’ll share those tomorrow!! :)

    Are there any essential oils that can be used to heal eczema? I’ve been rubbing coconut oil on my baby’s eczema a few times a day for about a week but it doesn’t seem to be working.

      YES!!! Great question and I’ll answer this again on Friday so everyone can see this answer, but I wanted to go ahead and answer here too… so you can get the info! :) Take 2 drops of Lavender and 2 drops of Melrose put them in the palm of your hand and then kind of mix them together and apply to the affected area. You can do this a few times a day. These two oils can be applied neat (meaning you don’t have to dilute with anything). {Please keep in mind that all oils I refer to are Young Living brand – these are the only oils I would trust to be applied to skin or ingested}.

  5. Thanks for this post/series. A couple of months ago, we had a guest speaker come in our MOPS group and talk about essential oils, and we made some “soft scrub” with EO’s and baking soda…and got some other recipes. I learned a lot and am interested in learning more!
