On human diploid cell cultures made from fetuses

Two different strains of human diploid cell cultures made from fetuses have been used extensively for vaccine production for decades. One was developed in the United States in 1961 (called WI-38) and the other in the United Kingdom in 1966 (called MRC-5).

WI-38 came from lung cells from a female fetus of 3-months gestation and MRC-5 was developed from lung cells from a 14-week-old male fetus. Both fetuses were intentionally aborted, but neither was aborted for the purpose of obtaining diploid cells. The fetal tissues that eventually became WI-38 and the MRC-5 cell cultures were removed from fetuses that were dead. The cellular biologists who made the cell cultures did not induce the abortions.

The following vaccinations were derived from aborted fetal cells: Polio, Hep A, MMR, Rabies,Vericella – Chicken Pox, Shingles.

What are your thoughts on the above statement? Where do you stand on this issue? Can you be both pro-life and ok with using a vaccination derived from aborted fetal cells? (if you are NOT pro-life this probably isn’t the best place for you to comment as that IS NOT up for any discussion here!)  I don’t want debate, just HONEST thoughts and feelings on both sides.

What an interesting moral question you have posed. For me, it would come down to whether the cells were donated (which doing a little internet search, it seems the tissue was indeed donated). I believe that Federal Law prohibits abortions for the express purpose of tissue/organ donation. Further that the doctor and parents are not allowed to profit from said donation. It creates a gray moral area. As long as those rules are in affect, then I personally can live with the use of that tissue.

So we have donated tissue that has been saving millions of lives for 2 generations. I take comfort in that fact, that from a great loss/tragedy something life-saving was created. The silver-lining.

Great post topic! Thanks for mentioning that pro-life is not up for debate! Amen! My thoughts…if the abortions did NOT occur with the intent to provide these cells then it is very similar in idea to using an organ donor’s organs/tissues. No matter how the person died (murder, accident, natural causes), the donation is still a good thing. If the parent(s) gave consent to use the baby’s body for scientific research then it is legally okay. Parents do have the right to decide this much like if they made this decision after birthing a still born or a child that dies at any point after birth (right? have not researched legal rights, but would assume that is how it is).

You’re correct, but this also has to do with the pro-life stance. An embryo/fetus does NOT have a choice. So for pro-lifers, saying that an adult who is murdered is the same thing because they chose to donate their organs/tissue is like letting the person who murdered that adult choose whether or not their organs are donated. The adult didn’t choose to be murdered of course, but they did choose to donate their own organs. It has to be on your driver’s license that you are an organ donor, or no one can take them.

Sure, like you said it’s legal. But something being legal doesn’t mean it’s right. I think the issue here is more whether it is right or not.

The word of God is true. He says “Be not decieved, God will not be mocked.” Using any part of a human baby in the name of science is an abomination and God will not bless those actions.

    • Chelsey says:

Elizabeth, thank you for sharing. Let me pose this then, if a baby were miscarried or delivered then died and I wanted to donate his or hers organs, would this be ok or do you think it would still be wrong and why or why not?

    • Howard Barr says:

Elizabeth, is there a difference between an adult dying (murder, accident, natural causes, etc.),their organs and tissues being harvested for donation and a baby dying (murder, accident, natural causes, etc.), their organs and tissues being harvested for donation?

It just seems from your statement that babies are valued more than adults. Should we not use organs and tissues harvested from adults? I freely admit that intent/meaning is so hard to read online, which is why I am asking for this clarification. For the record, definitely not attacking your position. :)

Which brings up another question. If adults are ok to harvest, is it the age of consent that makes the difference?

Honestly, I find this a very interesting moral question. Where does one draw a line?

*In our house* we refuse the vaccines stated based on the premise that they were done by murdered babies. While the babies were supposedly not aborted for the express purpose of these cell lines, these use of these particular cell-carrying vaccines (and hence population) are being benefited through the murder of innocent life. Had these cell lines come from a child which had died of natural causes- and the parents chose to donate to help in such a manner, rather than having their life snuffed out through murderous means, our family would feel differently. In our house, we refuse the vaccines based on our own personal convictions. However, we do not stand in judgment of others who feel differently. This is a very difficult issue for many, and I know my particular position is not a popular one.

    • Chelsey says:

BrandyLynn – thanks so much for your thoughts! This is indeed a difficult thing. I think the bottom line for everyone is to really pray about it and see where the Lord is leading your family. Thanks for sharing!!

      • BrandyLynn says:

(Chelsey, you don’t have to post this… but I wanted to reply to you.)

Amen! We could debate and share our “beliefs” all day… but what the bottom line comes to is prayerfully seeking the Lord’s leading for our own family… and not trying to play the Holy Spirit in the lives of others. Thank you for posting such a thought provoking question. It’s come up with my own family many times. (Especially since we are the odd ones who see things differently! LOL!) I don’t often reply to your blog, but I read most of your posts and thoughts, and have been enlightened and blessed by them.

        Blessings,
        Brandy

It makes me feel sick….the things we don’t know (or at least that I don’t know) amazes me. I am going to have to look into this…it’s a huge revelation.

I did not know these things. My children are already vacinated. I chose herd protection with caution (different schedule) due to my oldest son having Autism. God can make good come from bad choices (abortion) just as He can forgive those who make bad choices if they come to Him. No matter how short their lives, those babies did His work with the time they did have. It is good that abortions for the purpose of makeing the vacines isn’t allowed. That would be very wrong.

Renee, you’ve made some good points. The other thing, too, I firmly believe is that we can only walk in the knowledge that we do have! BTW, I am just curious, at what age did you begin to notice signs of autism in your son? Had you already begun vaccinations at that point?

      • Renee says:

Well, my son was born with down syndrome so my husband and I recognized it very late, age 8 – when his sensory system began to be really sensitive. However, he did stop attempting to repeating our names and babbling after his age 5 shots which included the MMR and the new chicken pox vacine. The chicken pox vacine was not required for school at the time but I was told that it would soon be required the following year and asked if I was interested. I pictured my son with chicken pox and not understanding why he couldn’t scratch and said yes. The health dept isn’t the best place for vacines and I now have a pediatrician. I was young and not really sure of how to mother/advocate. I also didn’t know about homeschooling or waiving the vacines. I thought everyone was indeed required to get them when my first two went through. My husband’s ex didn’t meantion Autism either but was not surprised last year at age 14 when he was finally Dx. I went through our box of papers with a developmental nurse practitioner. She was the first one willing to give it a good look though. There were signs of Autism very early but we’d thought it was normal for down syndrome. It wasn’t. I have detailed the Dx on my blog “A Long Journey to Peace” and there is a photo somewhere of the big box of papers. I have not yet written my testimony but it very much mirrors my journey with my oldest son. God used him and his rejection to till the soil of my heart. And even now my oldest son is my greatest teacher. I recently learned to pray for my husband’s ex and forgive her. She then called me up to ask me to adopt my oldest son just when I’d come to peace about never being able to. His twin sister also had issues with the shots. Mostly attention and focus for her. It was managable with routine so we didn’t seek Dx of the ADHD for her until middle school so that she could have some medication to help with the transition. Renee <3 Happy Mother's Day!

hi i just learned about all this myself my son is now 15 months old and if i would have knew this before he would not have received the first dosage of MMR and chicken pox or any shot that used aborted babies, my son had his shots in June we are now in the end of august and he had his first seizure a few days ago, we are unsure right now if the shot is to blame or what is but i have been finding a lot in common with MMR and dtap shots and seizures. He is only 15 months old and we have to have him put to sleep so they can do a MRI and EEG. this is so scary and after finding out the ingredients that’s in these shots is crazy i mean we would not give these items voluntarily so we is it we are giving these shots to our babies with out even knowing it! i think this is wrong and should be against the law!!! i will put up a fight because my son or any other children i have will not receive these shots!! feel free to e-mail me

I had prepared a paper and a speech for college against vaccinations and their effect on children with autism and death. The research out there is staggering and eye opening. Apart from the unethical use of aborted babies who died violent deaths and could not have given consent for their tissues to be used for the “greater good”, the vaccines themselves are cause for great concern and debate. It is imperative that parents take responsibility for their children and inform themselves. The government is not our keeper and doctors are not gods. I woulod not put that much poison into a horse much less a defenseless baby.

I am so happy to see that this site has been informative to others.
Many things have been found out: vaccines are not mandatory for school entry.
(at least not yet) the government is pushing for it.
This site has informed others of vaccines made from monkey poop and cells of an aborted fetus.

    Thank you

  11. Tabatha says:

I am not pro-life, however I feel that choosing to be pro-life for yourself is the moral option. So I think this is wrong. I won’t contribute to this practice by using the vaccines that contain this, or are formulated using it.
